Musicians from the Windjammers Circus Band had the time of their lives the day they all crammed into a small circus bandwagon for a parade in Chatfield, MN in 1981. For Harry, it was a dream come true.

Barbara recalls one of her most memorable circus performances–the day Harry was invited to sit in with the Carson and Barnes Circus as it warmed up for the performance. She had a seat right next to the chute where the Bengal tigers rushed past into the center ring–so close she could have touched them–and alongside the path where nineteen elephants and other assorted animals trotted by to get into the Grand Parade.

The Windjammers Circus Band

Most of the great percussionists of the forties and fifties are gone now, but four of them were still playing their hearts out in the Windjammers Circus Band in the eighties and nineties: Harry Brabec, Charles Owen, Buster Bailey and Boyd Conway. In this article you’ll also meet their buddy, Doug MacLeod, now 88 and still drumming with the Windjammers and the Plymouth Community Band. “Playing now helps me to stay mentally alert and physically fit,” he says.
