James Blades, a celebrated British percussionist, died in 1999 at the age of 97. This post features his books, “Percussion Books and their History,” and “Drum Roll,” with a drawing of Blades from the latter book’s fronticepiece. Harry Brabec, Bibliophile

You can tell a lot about a person’s interests and personality by looking at the kinds of books they collect. Harry left Barbara more than a thousand books in more then three dozen topic categories, and going through this collection proved to be a real adventure when she decided to sell most of his collection on the Amazon Marketplace. She was stunned to learn how much some of them were worth. It was like finding gold on the living room bookshelves.

Here is an update on the Cedar Rapids flood of 2008 and restoration efforts for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, which was the leading United States institution for the collection, exhibition, preservation and interpretation of Czech and Slovak history and culture. This article also discusses the damage to the Cedar Rapids Library, with several links to articles that discuss how the city is still trying to come back from its monumental losses.
